Dental Hospital Projects GDH

The Glasgow Dental Hospital without doubt has been one of the most demanding areas of management for Alterego driving our passion to learn different aspects of health care in an environment, which was not only a hospital facility but a teaching school under the auspices of "The Glasgow University".

Over the years Alterego has managed some £6 million worth of projects within this facility. The building itself, which is situated in the heart of Glasgow on Sauchiehall Street has been extremely problematic due to the presence of Asbestos throughout the internal and some external fabrics. Our knowledge on this subject through necessity has grown from strength as we have experienced the difficulties of having to remove asbestos from a live clinical and non clinical environment maintaining operational requirements at all times by carefully, methodically communicating and efficiently managing stakeholders and public personnel within the processes of delivering successful projects.

The projects have covered a wide spectrum of managed variety from Asbestos removal, to installing major infrastructure works including the demolition of an old plant room to the construction of a major plant room on the roof of the building. In addition we managed the upgrade and refurbishment of 2 main dental clinics within level 6 & 7,which included the upgrade of dental side surgeries.

The Infrastructure works were major concern as each element could have had a disastrous impact on the whole hospital at any one time if things did not go according to plan So meticulous strategic planning and management of appointed design teams and construction companies through the tender process was essential in order to achieve the ultimate goals of success. Structural, electrical, drainage and water works were removed and renewed over restrictive timescales, with road closures and the use of major cranes over the many months of activity.

Other such works carried out involved The upgrade of patient and staff toilets, creation of a faith room, upgrading of the main entrance, demolition and rebuilding of a medical gas store, installing weather proofing to the building, the creation of a child friendly reception area on level 3 & 5, the creation of a fully functional classroom on level 8 and the creation of an administration facility within level 2.

One disastrous occurrence happened which the hospital had a major flood. This affected numerous levels of the hospital but through good management practice and effective coordinating we ensured that operational effect was minimalized and we carried out essential water damage repairs and refurbished areas to a fresh completed acceptable level. Total project value was £400K.

Alterego was heavily involved in claim negotiations on the flood claim against parties over a period of 3 years.
